These Are Still the Good Ol’ Days

Bad things are happening all around us. Some are subjective, like politics, where it almost always seems like there’s an opposing perspective with plenty of support.

And then there are the things we all agree on — natural disasters, disease, violent crime — just objectively bad things.

Through it all, I’ve had this phrase that I do my best to believe. Sometimes aspirational, but always around: “These are the good ol’ days.”

It’s written on my office wall, stitched on hats, and repeated throughout my book Work Is Fun.

There’s a lot of discomfort in this idea when bad news hits. And someday the bad news will surely come more directly for me and the people I love — that’ll be the true test. But I hope I can still hold onto it, because there’s opportunity for connection, growth and meaning when we have the opportunity to face a hard thing.

We can’t stop bad things from happening. But we can control how we respond. We can decide to show up.

My wife’s mom is from Jamaica, and we have a lot of family down there. Right now, we’re feeling both sad and grateful — sad for the destruction, and grateful that our loved ones will be okay.

Nancy and I got married in Treasure Beach, at a magical spot called Jake’s. Word is that Jake’s is pretty much gone.

Horace, our blend lead at King of Pops, is from St. Elizabeth — the same area. He told me about 80% of the community is gone. His family is safe, but the rebuild will take everything.

“Give a little, take a little,” he said when I checked in with him. I nodded along pretending like I completely understood, and then followed up with my mother in law.

Without skipping a beat she said, "for whom much is granted, give a little keep a little. That is what my mom would always say." She went on, "No matter how small amount of produce my father brought in from the field, she would give away some, even if us kids were upset. That was her way of teaching us to give, also to share with each other"

Horace said it has been repeated often down there over the last week.

Maybe that’s how even the bad times become the good ol’ days. When we give, when we help, when we remember that we need each other. That’s what King of Pops strives to be about, and when we’re at our best, it really does feel like the good ol’ days.

So here’s what we’re doing:

We're going to raise funds and send a barrel (or more) of supplies to our wedding planner Adina. She is a community organizer and will do a great job of getting these things directly to the people who need them the most.

Here is how you can help 👇
